E. coli or Escherichia coli is a bacilli or rod-shaped Gram positive bacterium. It is one of the most frequently encountered bacteria in the Microbiology or Clinical Microscopy section of the laboratories as it is one of the most common causes of UTI or urinary tract infection. It is not to be confused with Entamoeba coli which is a commensal protozoan.
