Coelacanth is an ancient fish that is thought to have existed as far back as the Devonian period (around 380 million years ago) and was believed to have become extinct at the end of the Cretaceous period (around 70 million years ago). However, a live coelacanth was discovered in the sea off the coast of South Africa in 1938. A different type of coelacanth was also found in Indonesian waters in 1997.
